Sikkim

Sikkim is a landlocked Indian state in northeast India and bordered by Nepal to the west. Sikkim is an exquisite travel destination close to Nepal and it is famous for its outstanding natural beauty, culture and traditions. Permits are needed to enter the Sikkim so there might be some difficulty but it is a must visit travel destination eventually. From Nepal border Kakarvitta, it takes around 4 hours’ drive to reach Sikkim. Here are some places of interest in Sikkim:

Gangtok:

Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim and is located at 5500ft above sea level. The city is refreshingly clean and well organized. For the nature lovers, city would be a perfect destination. The alluring beauty of nature, lush green forests, fast running rivers would just drag people to stay for a couple of days. Also the adventure lovers can go for mountain biking, river rafting or a trek.

Nathu La:

Nathu la is the part the ancient silk-route and was one of the major passage between India and Tibet. This pass is located at 4310m above sea level and is one of the highest motorable pass in the world. However pass is only open to Indians, one can get the thrill of seeing Chinese soldiers on other side of the border.

Pelling:

Pelling is known for its mesmerizing view of mountain range of Himalaya including the world’s third highest peak, the Kanchenjunga. Monasteries are also the main attraction of Pelling. There are also many options for adventure such as hiking, kayaking, rafting and others.

Ravangla:

Ravangla is a beautiful town in Sikkim between Gangtok and Pelling. It hosts some of the popular treks in Sikkim. Ravangla is also famous for its Buddha Park where the huge 130ft statue is situated surrounded by beautiful gardens. Ravangla is also home for some endangered species of birds in the world such as Dark-throated Thrush, Babblers and cuckoos.

Yumthang Valley:

Yumthang valley is famous for its scenic natural beauty and hot springs which are visited by many foreigners. It is also known for the famous Rhododendron valley trek which is extended upto Lachen valley.

Besides these, there are several other places to visit such as Tsomgo Lake, Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, Gurudongmar Lake and several others.

Darjeeling

Darjeeling is a beautiful town in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located in the Mahabharat range of Himalaya at 6700ft above sea level. It takes about 3 hours’ drive to reach Darjeeling from Kakarbhitta, the eastern border of Nepal. Darjeeling is known for its large tea estates and rich culture and natural beauty. Some important places to visit in Darjeeling are listed below:

Darjeeling Himalayan railway:

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) is also known as “toy train”. It is a 2ft narrow gauge railway which runs along 78km from Darjeeling to New Jalpaiguri. It was built between 1879 and 1881AD and recognized as the world heritage site by UNESCO. The elevation of the railway varies greatly from 100m up to 2200m and characterized by unique loops and zigzags.

Tiger Hill:

Tiger hill is the highest point in Darjeeling and known for its spectacular sunrise view of Kanchenjunga and the entire eastern Himalayan range. It takes about 40 minutes’ drive to reach the Tiger hill from Darjeeling. The place is famous for trekking also and one can even enjoy the view of Mt. Everest on a clear day.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Darjeeling Zoo:

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) was established to honor Tenzing Norgay Sherpa after he and Sir Edmund Hilary climbed the Mount Everest in 1953AD. Thus it is also known as the pilgrim to all the climbers all over the world. Institute also have a museum displaying all the mountaineering and expedition artifacts.

Darjeeling Zoo is also present within the institute premise. Zoo becomes special because it has some rare Himalayan animals such as Red Pandas, Snow Leopards and Tibetan Wolf.

The Peace pagoda:

In about 10 minutes of drive from Darjeeling town, one can reach the Peace Pagoda where four large avatars of Lord Buddha is situated. This Japanese style Pagoda has spectacular view with golden sculptures in white background.
